Health Day
Health Day 2025 was incredible!
On Sunday, September 28th, our community gathered at our annual Health Day at North Avenue Presbyterian Church, and it was a wonderful afternoon together with our unhoused neighbors.
We had an incredible turnout as 305 guests and 297 volunteers showed up to celebrate good health and kinship. The weather was spectacular, and the time together was even better as our guests and volunteers connected in multiple ways.
Close to 200 guests received much-needed medical services, particularly in areas like check-ups, foot care, dental, vision, and mental wellness. Many also received medicines and referrals for continuing care after the event.
Many others received haircuts, manicures, showers, got registered to vote, signed up for SNAP benefits (food stamps), spent time with our prayer team, and enjoyed the music, books, art, food, and games available.
It’s hard to put into words how much this day means to our friends experiencing homelessness. Health Day is such a welcoming environment that is not common in the daily reality for our unhoused neighbors. The church parking lot was transformed into a hospitable space where we could all enjoy being in community with one another. It truly was a time of building kinship with one another.
One older gentleman shared with us during the event that he was moving into an apartment the next day, and that “this event came at the right time as I got a shower and a haircut. Now I’m ready to go, and tomorrow will be a fresh start!”
One volunteer shared that as she was serving drinks, one guests was concerned how she was doing and if she had eaten. He later returned with a hot dog for her!
One lady names Susanna wanted so badly to get a haircut and a manicure that she needed a little help getting to those sectionsas her body was so excited. The smile on her face during her haircut said it all!
Finally one guest named John made a point after his medical check-up to personally thank each person who helped him. He said, “I’ve been needing to go to the doctor, and I’m just so glad you were here for me.”
Finally this event could not have happened without our volunteers and partners, so thank you!
